The FRIENDS of Vatnajökull Association is a nonprofit organization that was founded on the 21st of June 2009 as a funding body for Vatnajökull National Park. The role of the association is to raise funds to support research, promotional and educational activities to ensure that as many people as possible can enjoy the natural phenomenon and the unique natural history that the National Park has to offer. FRIENDS of Vatnajökull is an independent social organization and the elected chairperson of its board is Halldór Ásgrímsson.
Work on the foundation of the association started in 2007
Once it became clear that Vatnajökull National Park would become a reality, numerous entities in the municipalities surrounding the National Park became interested in the foundation of the association and the creation of a grant fund to support worthy projects for the Park. Preparations started in the summer of 2007 and towards the end of that year a coordination committee was set up comprising eight members from the municipalities and tourist associations of the four districts that make up the Park. The objective of this committee was to prepare for the foundation of a fund-raising association for the Park. The coordination committee comprised Fridrik Sigurdsson and Pétur Snæbjörnsson for the northern district , Magnhildur Björnsdóttir and Skúli Björn Gunnarsson for the eastern district, Rannveig Einarsdóttir and Thorvardur Árnason for the southern district and Fridrik Pálsson and Bjarni Daníelsson for the western district. Within this group, a three person steering committee was appointed to lead the work. It comprised Bjarni Daníelsson, the chairman, Fridrik Pálsson and Fridrik Sigurdsson. The project manager was Margrét Sveinbjörnsdóttir of AP Public Relations. Haukur Hauksson of the Hátt og snjallt PR Company took over from her in April 2009 until the general manager Kristbjorg Hjaltadottir was recruited in September 2009.
Since the association's very inception, many individuals, companies and entities have lent a hand in the preparatory work. The FRIENDS Association is grateful to them all for their contribution.
